dreamt. is a very polished exploration platform shooter inspired by Cave Story.
The game has very crisp graphics, very smooth controls, nice music and sound effects and the gameplay is also great so far…
With its overall astounding quality this game has lots of potential!
Let’s see what further releases will bring us.
Note:
The game was canceled in January but the developer will release the source code so it would be possible that somenone else continues this fine project…
From the Homepage:
This is a game I’ve wanted to make for a long time. It’s a platformer with some explorative and ambient qualities. It’s inspired heavily by Cave Story and An Untitled Story and even to some extent Faxanadu. The storyline at this stage is still heavily under development.
Controls:
Cursor Keys = Movement
X = Shoot
Z = Jump
A,D = Circle through Weapons

More promising Cave Story inspired games here on Pixel Prospector.
It’s starting to get sickening how many of these freeware games are trying to be Cave Story. I mean, hell, the first three games on the front page have Cave Story in their description! I thought indie games were all about originality, new ideas, or just something different… But I seem to be wrong. The ticket to success : try to be Cave Story.
Well Intermission you are right that the last three days were all about Cave Story inspired games but consider that currently only 8 games out of 212 on Pixel Prospector are Cave Story influenced…
# Beat Em Up (9)
# Other (27)
# Platformer (135)
# Shooter (41)
Anyways don’t be afraid there are currently no more Cave Story influenced games on my list right now.
So expect a bit more variety in the next days…
Moreover you can check out the video series called “Underrated Indie Games” from the owner of Planet Freeplay.
Many different genres and constantly updated!
(Currently 76 games)

Watched the video; visual style doesn’t really work for me. I think the ground tiles and particle effects really clash with the character sprites…
Well looking at this game, I don’t think its a problem its sort of like Cave Story. Really the only way they’re alike is that they are both platform shooters.
When I say inspired by Cave Story, and An Untitled Story… I mean I played those games and was compelled to make my own platform shooter, with a quirky story and nice atmosphere.
@intermission: Success? Success where? in the indie ’scene’? I am making this game because I enjoy making games as a hobby, and this is a type of game I’ve wanted to make for a while. That’s all.
@JonCB – the only way they are alike? did you even pay attention to the video? art style is very similar if just a higher res and much crisper, the weapons and enemies are very similar, and the gameplay seems almost identical.
“success is 10% inspiration 90% perspiration”, not the other way around.
hopefully it will have an original story to go with its unorignal roots. the only cavestory inspired game im looking forward to is The Underside. THATS “cave story inspired” done right.
good luck.
oh, there is that secret passage!
anyway great game from what i’ve seen in demo, really good job so far. i especially like the graphics and that main tune which is really intriguing. really nice game, i’m only sorry it’s only a demo – i would be a blast taking time and play full length version in these cold, snowy days
Intermission – This may have been inspired by Cave Story, but lets not forget, Cave Story was heavily influenced by the Metroid series; Open exploration, progressive upgrades, multiple endings, etc.
Without defending my own game too much, I have to say that plenty of games use the same mechanics, and when they don’t they are often classed as gimmicky or novel.
@davidp: I didn’t create the music, because this was such an early demo I needed something to test out the music handling scripts, all songs came from http://modarchive.org/
“@intermission: Success? Success where? in the indie ’scene’? I am making this game because I enjoy making games as a hobby, and this is a type of game I’ve wanted to make for a while. That’s all.”
Cave Story is coming out on the Wii. It’s not just on the indie ’scene’. By success, I mean being popular. I understand that you like making games. I do, as well. I’m not saying that you can’t make games because that’s what you enjoy. The art style is similar to Cave Story, just like a ton of other indie games that I’ve seen recently. I just know that if people can be creative enough to come up with their own ideas for games, that they can come up with their own unique art style. If you want to personally attack me for my opinion because sensitivity to criticism, that’s your decision, but be prepared for people to criticize your game because people if people are gonna play, they’re gonna say what they think about it SOMEWHERE, be it positive or negative.
@MarlonArt – Oh, I guess you got me there! Yep! Let’s not forget that Cave Story was also inspired by the military in that you shoot a gun! And the first Donkey Kong was inspired by construction crews getting attacked by barrels!
… Yeah, totally.
Little bit of a typo on my last post, just rereading it real quick, and
“criticize your game because people if people are gonna play,”
should be
“criticize your game because if people are gonna play,”
I had too many people in there. Sorry if it was confusing.
“PixelProspector was founded to bring some light to those freeware games that i think have some real good potential. I started this whole idea with a thread one year ago on TIGSource Forums which has evolved into a pretty comprehensive list. In fact with all the promising games it became such a big list that i recognized that it’s time to make a blog out of it.
I hope that through this site these games get a good amount of attention and make the people curious enough to follow the development of these games.
Hopefully there will be many encouraging comments to keep the developers motivated and that they notice that their work is valued and worthwhile.”
Maybe you can start a competing blog dedicated to complaints about all the freeware games you don’t like.
@intermission: You missed my point with that success thing, what I meant is, you would be wrong to think I’m “copying” cave story in hopes of success. I can handle criticism, and it’s only fair that I can defend myself.
I wanted to make a platform shooter. Cave story is a good example of how a platform shooter should play. I modelled my own engine very closely to the mechanics of Cave Story. The art style isn’t retro, yet involves a cave theme and has blocks (Mario also had this), the character is a human with a gun; which of these aspects of the art style does Cave Story own? Sure it’s similar, but it’s also similar to games like Mario or Metroid. I’m not trying to deny the obvious connections to Cave Story, I’m just wondering why it’s so bad to want to make a similar game to games that I love (not only Cave Story), with no intention of selling it?
Also, you took MarlonArt’s point, and then exaggerated the shit out of it to discredit it.
I hope this comes out for XBLA arcade there is already ten people i know who would purchase this on the xbox 360 indie games.
According to the author’s blog, “dreamt.” is cancelled:
http://theheadremovalist.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/dreamt-is-cancelled/
- he also states that he plans to release the source, under a “free to derive”, but “not comercially” license (that is, I understand, GPL-like)
oh…
the game was so promising…
anyways thanks for the info akavel and lets hope that someone will continue this project once the source is released.
