Hydorah

Hydorah

Hydorah is an awesome and faithful loveletter to the horiztonal shooter genre.
The amount of polish, details and love putted into this game is just astounding. This is definitely some game of the year material right here!
If this game would have been released in the 90s it surely would have become a hit.
Now do yourself a favour: Get this gem and breathe some classic shooter air! It may bring a tear of joy to your eyes…

“Think of this game as a son of the classics: it have the genes, but it’s not a clone. It have a lot of original content, so I hope you understand my intentions when you see also something that reminds you of the old times ;-)” (Locomalito)

From the Homepage:
Hydorah is a game designed to hit straight to the heart of classic shoot em up players. Take the controls of your ship and “Prepare to die!”

Choose the path to follow and fight planet by planet against hordes of meroptians. Hydorah features lots of short and intense levels, fantasy spacial landscapes, unlockable weapons, secrets and a large library of enemies and bosses. There is a single dificulty level, adjusted by small random elements that makes every gameplay unpredictable, keeping the tension from the begining to the end.

Graphics and playability are both old school style, simple but hard polished. I want to give an special mention to the soundtrack, composed exclusively by the brilliant Gryzor87, who has no hesitated in taking legendary synthesizers to create a retrofuturistic, powerful and sometimes dark soundtrack. Each level have a same-lenght track, composed to fit with the visuals like a glove.

It takes obvious influence from Gradius, Castlevania or R-Type, but also from other classics treated worse by the time: Turrican, Enforcer, Space Manbow, Hellfire, Guardian, Hydefos, Armalyte and many others…
