Wizorb

Wizorb is an adventurous fantasy themed take on the breakout formula with RPG elements and glorious pixel art. It is without a doubt one of the best breakout games ever. After 2 years of development the developers Tribute Games created indeed an outstanding tribute to classic gameplay. Highly recommended!

The game is available on Steam and various other sites (but can also be purchased from the developers directly).

Moreover here is a nice article about Delicious Block-Breaking Games by Jonathan Lavigne (one of the creators of Wizorb who also developed the action platformer Ninja Senki). The fantastic illustration above was created by Michael Brennan.

Droid Assault

Droid Assault is a fast paced shooter that is inspired by the classic Paradroid.
Your mission is to destroy all robots in each level to progress to the next stage… However don’t kill all robots immediately because you cannot win the war without proper support. You need an army of robots! (the game offers 48 different ones)
So…in order to build that robotic army you have to use the convincing power of your laser beam to convert foes into friends. After that process you can control your newly acquired soldiers instantly and switch between them easily with the push of a button…
Build army, collect powerups, shoot robots. Awesome fun!

The game is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
If you want to see it in action consider to check out this video that shows 15 minutes of unedited gameplay footage.

An overall fantastic game that every shooter veteran should check out. Highly recommended!

Hyperspace Invaders Zero

Hyperspace Invaders Zero is a frantic vertical shooter with abstract graphics where you blast away massive amounts of enemies and collect their souls to increase your firepower.
Gameplay itself is pretty minimal because only the left and right arrow keys are needed to control the ship and its slippy laserbeam. However the simplicity doesn’t make it an easy game due to the sheer amount of stuff that is happening on screen.
Moreover by reaching a decent score you will unlock a Space Invaders and a Paratrooper remake.

The training mode offers 108 short waves whereas the normal game comes with 5 levels. (Demo offers ~25 training waves and 3 levels in normal mode)

In the beginning I thought that the game wasn’t that interesting… but after a few rounds the game got better and better and revealed its whole mesmerizing charm. Overall pretty cool arcade fun.
